Denver at 25 to 35: Winter in Denver If You Don't Ski

A practical look at Denver winter without ski passes: snow, sun claims, skating, spas and what people do on cold weekends.

Not skiing in Denver is way more common than your coworkers' mountain traffic stories make it sound. Plenty of people here spend winter in the city and never touch a lift ticket.

Winter here gets sold two ways: as a ski trip or as endless sunshine. Neither one matches a regular Tuesday in January, so it helps to know what you're actually working with.

The short version

Denver gets about 57 inches of snow a year on average, according to MSU Denver's student outlet (2023). That's a student publication, not the National Weather Service, so treat it as a ballpark.

The "300 days of sunshine" line traces back to a railroad publicist in the 1870s, per the same piece, and it only works if a day with one hour of sun counts. Metro Denver EDC still uses the line (checked 2026-11-04), but it's a marketing claim. Expect sunny stretches and gray ones, and plan for both.

What people actually do

Skate. Outdoor skating downtown is a winter staple, but last season shifted things. For 2025-26 the city skipped its usual Skyline Park rink because of construction, and the only downtown option was the McGregor Square plaza rink at 1901 Wazee St., near Coors Field, opening Black Friday (Denverite, 2025-11-26). Nothing's confirmed yet for this winter, so check before you go.

Do the spa thing. Cold, dry air pushes a lot of people toward skin care and saunas. Jalan Facial Spa in Uptown has 4.8 stars from 1011 reviews as of 2026-11-04, and the listing says estheticians customize treatments. For a bigger day, Relache Spa at Gaylord Rockies in Aurora sits at 4.9 stars from 1416 reviews as of 2026-05-02 and is tagged for sauna and staycations. Woodhouse Spa in Littleton has 4.7 stars from 975 reviews as of 2026-05-02 and is tagged couples-friendly, which makes it an easy date-day pick.

Hang out somewhere with lots going on under one roof. The Source Hotel in RiNo has 4.3 stars from 1762 reviews as of 2026-05-01, with coffee, local vendors and farm-to-table food in the listing. Good for a cold Saturday when nobody wants to commit to one plan.

For dated stuff like markets, shows and holiday things, the events calendar is where to look week to week.

The practical stuff

A snowy morning doesn't have to wreck your weekend, but the spas out in Aurora and Littleton are a drive, so check roads before you leave. If you're staying central, RTD is worth checking for routes so you're not parking on a slushy street.

Book spa appointments ahead around the holidays so you're not stuck with whatever slot is left. Skating plans should wait until rinks actually announce dates.
