Lore Check: If You Don't Like Denver Weather, Wait Five Minutes

Denver's wait five minutes line, checked: the fastest official swing we found was 37F in one hour at DIA in 2022.

"If you don't like Denver weather, wait five minutes." You hear it on a patio in late October when it's sunny at 3 pm and somebody's already wondering whether Saturday's costume needs a coat over it. It's the first local line most transplants learn.

We pulled a year of daily highs from NOAA's ACIS records for Denver, Chicago and New York. Then we went through NWS Boulder's temperature change tables, which go back to 1872, and its December 2022 climate summary to find the fastest swing anyone official has actually measured.

The ruling: Mostly Legit

Mostly Legit. DIA's temperature fell 37F in one hour on Dec 21, 2022 (NWS Boulder, preliminary, checked Oct 26). That's the fastest official swing we found: Denver flips fast, just not in five minutes.

The catch is the clock. That one-hour reading came from the airport's automated station, and NWS labeled it preliminary. No official page we found records a Denver change measured in minutes. Most days don't flip either: from Oct 25, 2025 to Oct 25, 2026, the high moved 20F or more from the day before on 23 days (NOAA ACIS, checked Oct 26).

Those 23 days still beat Chicago's 18 and New York's 9 over the same stretch (NOAA ACIS, checked Oct 26). The biggest one-day drop in Denver's high was 77F to 41F on Apr 17, 2026. The biggest jump went the other way, 39F to 70F on May 7, 2026.

The long record backs the reputation. NWS Boulder's largest same-day change since 1872 is 66 degrees, on Jan 25, 1872 (NWS Boulder, checked Oct 26). Two modern days tie for third at 61 degrees: Jan 5, 2015 and Dec 21, 2022, the same day as that one-hour plunge.

What to actually do

If your weekend plan (a patio night, a costume party, a first ski day) rests on a 70F afternoon, check the forecast two days out too: over the last 10 years, a 70F+ Denver day was followed by measurable snow within 2 days 30 times (NOAA ACIS, checked Oct 26).

How we checked

We used daily highs from NOAA ACIS threaded city records for Denver, Chicago and New York, Oct 25, 2025 to Oct 25, 2026, plus NWS Boulder's record tables and its December 2022 summary. A swing day is a high 20F or more above or below the previous day's high. We ruled Mostly Legit because Denver's swings are real and outsized, but the fastest official one took an hour. Daily highs and lows can't show change within minutes or hours; that would take hourly records.
