Where to Celebrate in Denver (2026): Birthday, Anniversary and Big-Night Dinners

Birthday before a show, dinner after a proposal, or a solo night out for your 40th: the right Denver restaurant depends on the occasion. Here's where to book.

In one week this month, r/Denver had three separate threads asking the same question: where do I go for a real celebration? A birthday dinner before a show at the Ellie Caulkins, somewhere to go right after a proposal, and a solo night out for someone turning 40. The right answer depends on the occasion, so this guide is organized that way. Every restaurant here was confirmed open in October 2026. If you'd rather skip the restaurant, try one of our date ideas that aren't dinner.

The quick picks

  • The big splurge: The Wolf's Tailor, Colorado's only two-Michelin-star restaurant.
  • Before a show: Corinne, a few blocks from the Denver Center.
  • Big group birthday: Hop Alley.
  • Anniversary or post-proposal: Barolo Grill.
  • Treating yourself: a seat at the sushi bar at Uchi.
  • Pure fun: Casa Bonita.

The big splurge: Michelin stars

Denver has eight Michelin-starred restaurants in the 2026 guide. If the occasion calls for the best meal of the year, start here, and book at least a few weeks out.

  • The Wolf's Tailor in Sunnyside became Colorado's first two-star restaurant in 2025 and kept both stars this year. It's a tasting menu, most recently listed at $225 a person.
  • Beckon in RiNo is a one-star tasting menu experience that runs about two hours. It's small and intimate, which is the point.
  • Brutø on Blake Street holds one star for its multicourse tasting menu.
  • Alma Fonda Fina in LoHi, from chef Johnny Curiel, holds one star for its modern Mexican cooking, and it's the most fun room of the group.

The rest of Denver's starred list: Mezcaleria Alma, Kizaki, Margot and Milpero, which earned its first star this year. Expect tasting menus in the $175 to $225 range per person before drinks and tip, based on the most recently published prices.

Before a show at the Denver Center

For a dinner before the Ellie Caulkins Opera House or any Denver Center show, you want something close, good and able to get you out in time.

  • Corinne, at 1455 California Street, is the closest pick, with 4.7 stars across more than 6,000 reviews.
  • Rioja on Larimer Square is chef Jennifer Jasinski's Mediterranean flagship and an easy walk to the theater.
  • Panzano in the Hotel Monaco is classic Italian, just a few blocks away.
  • Guard and Grace, at 1801 California Street, is the steakhouse move if the birthday person wants a big night.

Book for 5 or 5:30 if curtain is at 7:30, and tell your server you have a show when you sit down.

Steakhouse birthdays

Guard and Grace is the modern pick, with 4.7 stars across more than 4,600 reviews. A5 Steakhouse in LoDo is the other strong choice for a big-night steak dinner.

Big group birthdays

  • Hop Alley in RiNo is a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and its family-style Chinese is made for a table of eight passing plates.
  • Tavernetta next to Union Station is also a Bib Gourmand, and the Italian menu works for a group with mixed appetites.
  • Safta in RiNo does Israeli food that's built for sharing.
  • Sushi Den on South Pearl is the long-running birthday sushi spot for a reason.

Casa Bonita, Lakewood

The most fun birthday in the metro. Casa Bonita is reservations only, through its own website, with parties capped at 10. Every reservation includes an entrée, chips and salsa, a soft drink, sopapillas and the cliff divers, puppet shows and live music. A 15% service charge is added automatically, and the current booking window runs through January 10. Book the minute you know the date.

Anniversaries and post-proposal dinners

  • Barolo Grill in Cherry Creek is Denver's classic romantic Italian, with 4.7 stars across more than 1,100 reviews.
  • Bistro Vendôme on Larimer Square is a French bistro tucked into the city's oldest block.
  • Restaurant Olivia does Italian with a neighborhood feel and sits at 4.7 stars.
  • Mizuna, Frank Bonanno's Capitol Hill fine-dining room, is the dressier option.

Then get a drink with a view at 54thirty Rooftop or a quieter cocktail at Union Lodge No. 1. Making a weekend of it? See Denver's best hotels for a romantic getaway and our rooftop bar guide.

Treating yourself

Turning 40 and taking yourself out is a great idea, and the best seats in Denver for it are at a bar. Sit at the sushi bar at Uchi or Sushi Den and let the chef steer. Finish with a nightcap at Williams & Graham, the speakeasy behind the bookcase in LoHi. It's in our speakeasy guide too, and there's more on this stage of life in Denver in your 40s.

How to book a celebration

  • Mention the occasion when you book. A lot of places will do something small, like a candle or a note on the table.
  • Go on a Thursday if you can. You'll have far more reservation options than on a Saturday.
  • Read the cancellation policy. Tasting menus and Casa Bonita charge for no-shows.
  • Flag dietary needs early. Tasting-menu kitchens need notice to work around allergies.
