Drive Math: Bear Lake Timed Entry Ended Oct 18, Leaving a 5.2-Hour Drive

Bear Lake timed entry ended Oct 18. Sat Oct 31 is 5.2 hours in the car for 4 on site, $15 each plus gas.

Bear Lake is a long way to go for a Saturday hike, and the math backs that up.

The Bear Lake timed-entry season ended Oct 18, so getting in on Sat Oct 31 takes only the $30 vehicle pass. Our call is Go Only If, and the number that decides it is 0.78: 4 hours on site for 5.2 hours in the car.

The drive

OSRM puts Union Station to the Bear Lake trailhead at 129 minutes free-flow, 76.9 miles one way (checked 2026-10-22). The corridor is US-36 northwest. We pad the way out by x1.15 (148 min) and the way back by x1.25 (161 min) for weekend afternoon traffic coming down US-36 and I-25. Both factors are our assumptions. Check COtrip before you leave. We couldn't confirm any bus or shuttle from Denver running Oct 31.

Time on the ground

A visit here is hiking. We couldn't find official NPS trail stats for the Bear Lake area, so the 4 hours is our planning assumption. NPS puts the Bear Lake parking area at 9,475 ft (USGS says 9,512). Four hours there against 5.2 in the car is a 0.78 ratio, which we grade borderline.

What it costs

  • Gas: check AAA Colorado gas prices. We couldn't confirm a current AAA average on 2026-10-22, so gas is left out of the total. You'll burn 3.08 gallons each.
  • 1-Day Vehicle Entrance Pass: $30.00, covers one private vehicle and everyone in it for a day, so $15.00 each split 2 ways (NPS fees page, checked 2026-10-22). Card only at entrance stations. Oct 31 isn't a 2026 fee-free day.
  • Plus any separate Bear Lake parking fee, which we couldn't confirm. None is posted on the NPS fees page (checked 2026-10-22).
  • Total: $15.00 per person (plus gas)

Friction and crowds

Timed Entry+ for the Bear Lake Road corridor was required through Sun Oct 18, 2026, per the NPS timed-entry page (checked 2026-10-22), so Oct 31 needs no reservation. The Bear Lake Shuttle also stopped Oct 18. NPS says Bear Lake Road is open year-round and that temporary closures can go into effect at any time based on weather. Live road status isn't posted on the park website. NPS points to message boards in the park and @RockyNPS, and the Park Information Office (970-586-1206) answers 8 am to noon on winter weekends. We couldn't confirm the road and lot will be open on Oct 31, and we found no current official lot-fill data.

Forecast

When we checked on 2026-10-22, the NWS forecast for Bear Lake (RMNP) only ran through Wed Oct 28, so we have no forecast for Sat Oct 31. Check the NWS point forecast on Friday. SNOTEL showed 0 in of snow on the ground at the Bear Lake station (0.1 mi away) and at Wild Basin (8 mi away, snow water at 33% of median) on 2026-10-21. No NWS alerts were active when we checked on 2026-10-22. Once snow falls, the CAIC forecast is where avalanche danger gets posted.

Verdict: Go Only If Friday's NWS Forecast Shows No Winter Weather

Go only if the NWS forecast for Bear Lake (RMNP) still shows no winter weather for Sat Oct 31 when you check on Friday. Entry is $15.00 each plus gas with no permit needed. The 0.78 ratio is borderline, so it pays off only if you use the full 4 hours on site.

Closer swap

Chautauqua Park is 38 minutes free-flow (OSRM, checked 2026-10-22) and 92 minutes in the car round trip with our factors, 217 minutes less than Bear Lake (RMNP). It's the same kind of day (a hike) up the same US-36 corridor. The City of Boulder says parking at Chautauqua is free outside the summer shuttle season. We couldn't confirm its hours for Oct 31.

Food on the way home

Happy Camper Pizza sits 0.4 mi from I-25 at 20th St in LoHi, with 4.7 stars from 6,916 Google reviews as of 2026-05-02. It has the top score by the rule in the formula.

The formula

  • Out: 129 min free-flow (OSRM, Union Station to Bear Lake trailhead, Rocky Mountain National Park, 76.9 mi, checked 2026-10-22) x 1.15 = 148 min.
  • Back: 129 min x 1.25 = 161 min.
  • In the car: 148 + 161 = 309 min (5.2 hours).
  • Ratio: 4 hours on site / 5.2 hours in the car = 0.78 (1.0 or better works as a day trip, under 0.6 doesn't).
  • Gas: 153.8 mi round trip / 25 mpg = 6.15 gallons, / 2 people = 3.08 gallons each.
  • Our assumptions: x1.15 for a Saturday morning on US-36 toward Boulder, x1.25 for a weekend afternoon back down US-36 and I-25, 4 hours of hiking, 25 mpg, 2 people per car.
  • Food stop: Happy Camper Pizza, 4.7 x log10(6916 + 10) = 18.05, the top score among directory restaurants rated 4.3+ with 150+ Google reviews within 1.5 mi of I-25 at 20th St (LoHi).
  • Gas cost: 3.08 gallons each x AAA Colorado regular price = gas per person. We couldn't confirm a current AAA price on 2026-10-22, so check AAA and add it yourself.
  • Total: gas (not included) + $30.00 vehicle pass / 2 = $15.00 per person.
